Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to join a committee?

Each Sister City has a committee of community members who work throughout the year to support  events, cultural exchanges, and fundraising for their Ukrainian counterpart.

Committees meet 2 times a month for 1 hour, and plan events at their own pace. Each committee is supported by UAI staff, and anyone can join them regardless of experience.

Consider joining the local committee in your town! You can use the contact form to initiate that process!

I want to volunteer! What can I do?

Our team is always in need of additional support. Volunteers can expect to help with packing aid for shipment, tabling or assisting at events, and supporting committee activities.

We are grateful for the help of community members and encourage student groups, clubs, and scouts to join our volunteer opportunity list. Use the contact form to express your interest and we will reach out to you with opportunities!

I have a business, can I donate/support somehow?
  1. Community partnerships enable us to make the most of our events and fundraising. We appreciate the support of local businesses and organizations.

We invite you to either donate in-kind in support of an event, or even for shipment to Ukraine. Or your business can host a fundraiser! Our staff are happy to coordinate with you to enable success.

UAI is a 501-c3 non profit and donations, in cash or as products/services, are tax deductible. Contact us to join our vendors list and hear about opportunities to collaborate in future events and fundraising.

What types of donations do you accept?

We can accept donations of funds through our donation page, or via Venmo or Wire Transfer. For more information please visit our Donation page.

We also coordinate regular shipments of In-Kind aid to Ukraine through a variety of partners across the country. The type of aid needed may be specific to the communities we work with and what civilians are asking for. If you believe you have in-kind donations please contact us.

How do you decide what type of aid you send?

We work directly with civilians and civilian leadership living in the community we service to understand what their needs are. For some of our communities the requests are urgent, and require immediate funds to support. Others can be seasonal, like seeds for farming or wood heat pellets for the winter, allowing us to plan ahead.

The decision of what aid to send, and when, is made in collaboration between our Ukrainian leaders and Friendship City committees. UAI serves as the facilitator and coordinator of these deliveries.

How does aid make it to Ukraine?

In-Kind aid is sent to our staff on the ground in Ukraine directly. We coordinate shipping based on the type of aid being sent, but the majority of shipments are sent via air into Europe where they are driven into Ukraine. Once in Ukraine it is stored in our warehouse before our local staff drive to the various cities. Volunteers often help with unpacking the aid and handing it out to civilians.

Our team partners with NGOs throughout the process.

Donated funds are securely transferred to our staff base in Ukraine, and all spending is appropriately vetted and documented. When purchasing vehicles or other big items we do our best to work within the Ukrainian community, helping stimulate the economy and support locals whenever possible.

I would like more information on your financial transparency.
