Destruction of a temple
Sviatohirsk is a city in the northern part of the Donetsk region of Ukraine and includes the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra (above), one of the holiest sites in Ukrainian Orthodoxy. The beautiful city was known as the greenest in Ukraine due to the urban green space per inhabitant.
In times of peace, small Sviatohirsk, with its urban and rural population of 9,068, received 200,000 tourists a year.
On May 30, 2022 the armed forces of the Russian Federation launched a massive ground offensive with powerful artillery strikes on the city. The next day, Infantry troops began an assault on Sviatohirsk. Within a week, they had captured the eastern part of the city, while the Ukranians maintained hold of the west. It was four months of fighting before the town was liberated.

A long awaited aid has launched in the city of Sviatohirsk: wood pellets! The small wood by-products are a pivotal resource for the communities in Ukraine facing the cold winter. They can be made from wood fibers and are highly efficient for heating. UAI has established a wood pellet machine in Sviatohirsk, ensuring a long lasting solution to heating for the foreseeable future.

Mayor of Sviatohirsk, Volodymyr Rybalkin, requested help on a call with leadership from Easton and Ashland; they were in need of a new dump truck and some additional fixes to an existing vehicle.
October, 2023
The Students of Sviatohirsk and Easton attended a joint video call as part of our cultural exchange program. In Sviatohirsk, Executive Director Brian Mayer and Operations Director Bogdan Shestopalov joined students in their classroom for the call. Meanwhile in Easton, Director of Development Katya Wauchope joined the Easton Committee members in their classroom.

In collaboration with our partners at Wise Water we installed a much needed water filtration system to the city of Sviatohirsk! This system will enable thousands of gallons of water from the local well to become clean drinking and cleaning water- a commodity limited thanks to attacks affecting prior water systems in the city.

Trash removal means cleaner streets and healthier communities, and can even support the clearing of debris from ongoing attacks and raids. It is also important to keep the streets clear so emergency vehicles can navigate the city. Providing Sviatohirsk with proper resources for trash disposal enables a cleaner, healthier city for citizens.
