On the 9th of March — in our continued mission to provide a much needed support to communities in Ukraine — we embarked on a guided tour with the mayor of Druzhkivka. We were confronted with the devastating consequences of war.
The schools, once beacons of education, lay in ruins, their walls echoing the laughter of children now displaced. We saw the remnants of the only competition ice skating rink in Donetsk, which had been cherished by the locals and now stands as a symbol of destruction.
Druzhkivka is renowned for its exceptional K-8 education system, but the war has disrupted the lives of its young students. The educational facilities we visited had once thrived, supported by foreign grants that provided modern amenities like state-of-the-art cafeterias and winter insulation.
Now, these schools bear the scars of conflict, leaving the children without the nurturing environment they deserve.
We also witnessed the destruction of children’s recreational facilities, places where young minds could explore and play.
The devastating impact on the community was evident, even though Druzhkivka had not been directly occupied by enemy forces. The resilience and determination of the people were inspiring, but they need our help to rebuild their lives and provide a brighter future for the next generation.
